World Consumer Rights Day

The Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in collaboration with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) on Wednesday 15 March 2017 celebrated World Consumer Rights Day and the theme for this year was ‘Consumer Rights in the Digital Age’. In this regard, the day was commemorated in partnership with all ICT service providers alongside Consumer Associations.

The Celebration was centered on creating awareness and advocating on the following:

  • Consumers Online Protection;
  • Consumers Data Safety and;
  • Consumers Rights & Responsibilities

The Event was celebrated in three phases on the day as follows:

  1. March Pass from Serrekunda Market through Kairaba Avenue and onto the Westfield Monument
  2. Good Will Statements from Consumer Protection Groups and The Minister of Information and Communication Infrastructure Demba A. Jawo at the Father Farrell Hall at Westfield Junction.
  3. Panel Discussion involving Consumer Groups, and Telecom operators at the Father Farrell Hall at Westfield

Workshop On ‘The Interface between Competition Law and Intellectual Property Law (IP)’

The Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission hosted a day’s workshop on the topic ‘The Interface between Competition Law and Intellectual Property Law (IP)’ which was designed to expose participants to the complex legal and economic issues between the two and equip them with the knowledge on ways to address anti-competitive issues of IP rights with regard to the Gambia Competition Act 2007.

 

The workshop, which was held at the National Assembly Conference Hall on the 21st February 2017 was facilitated by Dr. Mor Bakhoum, a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property and Competition based in Munich, Germany, and an expert in the field of Competition Law.

 

The workshop was attended by officials from the Ministry of Justice, The Judiciary, The Gambia Bar Association, PURA, GIEPA and NCAC. The workshop was also graced by Mrs. Fatou Jagne Senghore, Director of Article 19, Mr. Cherno Marenah, Former Solicitor General and Legal Secretary of The Gambia, Mr. Mahecour Diouf, Head of the Competition Commission of the Republic of Senegal amongst others.

GCCPC & PURA JOINT TRAINING WORKSHOP

The gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) are organizing a workshop to introduce the Advertisement Regulations contained in the section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act, and the new Complaints  Management System Developed by PURA. The workshop would also witness the signing of an MOU between GCCPC and PURA.
