We are pleased to announce the formal inauguration of the Implementation Committee by the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC) today, July 9, 2025, to implement the recommendations of the cross-border market study on digital financial services (DFS) and e-commerce conducted last year, facilitated by the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (2021–2023). This significant step underscores the GCCPC’s commitment to fostering fair competition and robust consumer protection in The Gambia’s digital economy.
Conducted in collaboration with esteemed partners, including the Central Bank of The Gambia (CBG), Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (MoCDE), Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA), Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE), Gamswitch Company Limited, and the Information Technology Association of the Gambia (ITAG), the study identified key challenges, including market concentration, restrictions on cross-border remittances, lack of interoperability, data security concerns, and consumer issues such as misleading advertising and inadequate customer service.
The Implementation Committee, comprising GCCPC, CBG, MoCDE, PURA, MoTIE, Gamswitch, ITAG, the Consumer Protection Consortium, Gambia Information and Communication Technology Agency, and The Gambia Bankers Association, will drive transformative change over the next five months (July–December 2025). The Committee’s objectives include:
– Addressing competition and consumer welfare challenges in DFS and e-commerce.
– Facilitating seamless cross-border remittances within ECOWAS.
– Promoting interoperability among digital financial platforms to enhance consumer access.
– Advocating for the enactment of Cybersecurity and Data Protection Bills.
– Raising public awareness of consumer rights and business obligations through media campaigns and a dedicated Consumer Guide.
– Ensuring equitable access to data and services across digital platforms.
Through regular coordination and stakeholder engagement, the Committee will align its efforts with The Gambia’s Recovery Focused National Development Plan to build a competitive, transparent, and consumer-focused digital market.
